By its very nature, transport planning requires foresight and significant investment. Decisions about transport planning need to be responsive to a constantly changing environment.
Paul Low, KPMG’s National Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare Industry Lead Partner, will look at how well our transport systems are dealing with rapid changes in population, technology, lifestyle and community demand. Citizens have heightened mobility expectations as lifestyle complexity and new market entrants and technology are disrupting our traditional thinking around transport solutions. New offerings, such as mobility as a service, autonomous and electric vehicles, fast and high speed rail, are gathering momentum. These new mobility forces will also shape the urban form and fabric within our cities, and between our cities and regions. Australian cities are experiencing significant investment in mass rapid transit systems. The Sydney Metro network, the Melbourne Metro and the Cross River Rail are all progressing at various stages of development. These investments alone are worth over $60 billion. Transport investment has traditionally been planned to meet travel demand and operational needs. However, planning priorities have now evolved to be more about city shaping to drive sustainable growth. This city shaping, is occurring at both a regional and local scale as a result of the catalytic investment in mass rapid transit.
