Access to affordable and diverse housing is crucial to the development of diverse, vibrant and sustainable communities. It allows people to establish roots within their community and contribute to the economic development of their communities by providing a workforce for industry and delivering essential, community and support services.
Regional and rural housing markets are however influenced by a range of factors such as local population and economic trends, the cost and availability of capital, policy controls,investment returns and others. As such, issues of affordability and the supply of quality housing in the required locations can inhibit the economic and social development of regions.
These challenges are currently heightened across regional and rural Australia and this is leading to (amongst others) the following key challenges: population retention and attraction; social issues; and business viability/sustainability. Moreover, severe housing shortages are occurring against the backdrop of major planned investment in regional Australia.
This course will explain the steps and best practices to supporting successful land and housing development outcomes in regional Australia and covers the issues facing developers (government and private sector) and local councils to plan, fund and deliver land and housing in regional Australia.
Participants will engage in discussions and exercises to understand what are the practical and implementable policies, programs, projects (capital and non-capital) and governance arrangements that can accelerate and support the delivery of land and housing
development.

Presenters
Tim Connoley is passionate about developing solutions to complex urban development problems and projects. He does this based on his intimate knowledge of the development sector, the local economic landscape and global trends and best practice benchmarks. Given his background in economic development and commercial advisory, Tim has a mixed-use development role at Urbis that exposes him to the private sector and government-led projects across the country.
Tim has a strong interest in informing government investment and policy decision-making. He regularly advises on major infrastructure projects, is an expert advisor for policy and approval decision-making authorities and was an ongoing advisor for the Western Australia State Government’s $1 billion per annum Royalties for Regions initiative.
Dane Gaunt M澳门2023全年正版免费资料 is a uniquely experienced urban and regional planner who has been exposed to both the public sector and private sector perspectives of planning with a focus on achieving results and delivering outcomes. Dane has experience across a diverse range of projects, including as a Senior Policy Adviser to the Minister for Planning, has garnered him with a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of urban and regional planning.
Dane grew up in Margaret River and now leads Urbis’ South West Office located in Dunsborough. Being on the ground in the South West and having written his thesis on affordable housing for young people in the regions, Dane has a first-hand appreciation for the challenges facing rural and regional communities. Since joining Urbis, Dane has combined his extensive experience with his passion for delivering affordable housing outcomes to assist State Government Agencies, Local Governments and the private sector in identifying barriers to the delivery of affordable housing and devising strategies to overcome these barriers.
Julie Saunders M澳门2023全年正版免费资料 is an urban planner with over 25 years of experience working in diverse roles around the country. Her passion for serving community is demonstrated in her breadth of experience across various levels of government, the not-for-profit sector as well as in the private sector.
Julie commenced her career in town planning and has undertaken large scale master planning for communities across South East Queensland. She has a diverse range of experience in the planning and development pipeline through her roles in statutory and strategic planning and agency work.
Prior to her property career, Julie enjoyed roles involved in the reform of the planning system through her work with the Queensland State Government, advocacy work across the education sector through the Queensland Schools Planning Commission and as manager of large scale development assessment teams in local government.
Julie was recently appointed by the Minister as the Chair for the Housing Supply Expert Panel and is also Chair of the Queensland Chapter of Learning Environments Australasia
This broad experience across both government and the not for profit sectors positions her perfectly at Urbis to continue her city shaping work.
