This award recognises a great place - one that attracts and inspires. Clark+Granger was commissioned by the Cullen Bay Marina Management Corporation to undertake a preliminary design for the proposed upgrade to Marina Boulevard. The design team has managed to retrofit existing poor urban design to successfully create a place which brings people together to eat, drink, work and play.
The Marina Boulevard is the commercial and retail centre of Cullen Bay. The judges were impressed by the ability of the design team to create a strong connection between the commercial district and the beachfront, which was previously lacking. These design interventions are complimented by additional wayfinding, amenities and lighting which also addresses previous issues of safety and functionality.
The judges noted the multi-functional nature of many of the design elements, including the amphitheater and extended lawn area, which add additional amenity and functionality to the place.
The judges were particularly impressed by how the design responds to the climate, including the replacement of bitumen surfaces with light colored brick pavers to reduce heat absorption and ambient temperatures. They recognised the vined arbors and new trees will provide much needed shade and encourage pedestrian movement across the site.
