Integrating First Nations Values, Perspective and Knowledge into State of Environment Reporting: A Case Study of Queensland State of Environment Reporting
Tayla Miller - Griffith University

Land of the Traditional Owners: Lands of the Kombumerri people in the Yugambeh language region

In this project, Tayla Miller examined the incorporation of Indigenous and First Nations knowledge into environmental management, with a specific focus on State of the Environment reporting in Queensland. The project examined how effectively indigenous knowledge and thought is incorporated into current environmental processes in Queensland, as well as the barriers to developing a more inclusive approach.

The project offered a range of thoughtful recommendations to overcome the barriers identified including engaging in genuine co-design with indigenous stakeholders and ensuring non-indigenous staff were appropriately trained.

The judges were impressed with the breadth of engagement undertaken for the project - with collaboration between the researcher, indigenous traditional owner groups and government agencies.

The judges were also impressed with the potential for the recommendations to be incorporated across multiple Australian and international jurisdictions - leading to better representation of traditional knowledge in government decision-making.
